Cable glands for panels, machines and outdoor use

A cable gland seals the cable entry, maintains the enclosure rating and takes the strain off the cable. We supply metric glands in polyamide, brass and EMC versions with the clamping range that matches your cable.

Thread size and clamping range

Pick the thread size from the hole in the enclosure (M16, M20, M25 and up), then the gland whose clamping range holds your cable diameter near its middle. An M20 gland rated 6–12 mm on an 11.8 mm cable is a borderline case: the seal works at its limit and pull-out force drops. If your cable sits between two sizes, take the wider range with a reducing ring.

Material: polyamide, brass or stainless

Polyamide is the panel-building standard: light, insulating and resistant to most cleaning agents. Nickel-plated brass suits high mechanical load, higher temperature or where a metal housing must stay electrically continuous. Stainless steel belongs in food, pharma and outdoor installations with high-pressure cleaning. With metal glands always match the sealing washer to the enclosure material.

EMC glands for screened cable

On drives and servo motors the cable screen must contact the enclosure all the way round. An EMC gland does that with contact springs or a clamping cage onto the exposed screen. The screen must be exposed over its full circumference, not twisted into a pigtail — the most common mistake, and it costs a large part of the attenuation.

IP rating in practice

The stated rating applies to a round, smooth cable inside the clamping range with the nut correctly torqued. Corrugated conduit, flat cable or a damaged jacket will not reach it. Outdoors, prefer entries from below and close unused holes with blanking plugs of the same rating.

Frequently asked questions

Which gland fits a 10 mm cable?
An M16 rated 5–10 mm sits at the top of its range; M20 rated 6–12 mm is the better choice, keeping the cable mid-range so the seal performs as stated.
When do I need an EMC gland?
On screened motor and signal cables at drives and servos. The screen must contact the enclosure all round, which a standard gland does not do.
Can a gland be used on a cable carrier cable?
Yes, but put the strain relief on the carrier, not on the gland. Otherwise the gland absorbs the movement forces and the seal eventually leaks.
Can I feed a connectorised cable through a gland?
No. For pre-terminated cables use a cable entry system with split grommets that wrap around the cable.
