Choosing the NW size

Conduit is designated by a nominal width (NW) that roughly matches the inner diameter. Add up the outer diameters of all cables, multiply by 1.3 to 1.5 if the bundle moves or gets pulled, and take the next NW above that. Oversized conduit rattles and abrades from the inside; undersized conduit makes pulling nearly impossible and sharply raises bending force.

Plastic or metal

Polyamide conduit is light, impact resistant and oil resistant, the machine-building standard. Polypropylene suits chemical exposure, PE suits simple protection at low cost. Metal conduit, usually galvanised steel with or without a plastic jacket, is for sparks, hot chips, high temperature or a genuine impact risk. With metal, allow for the larger minimum bending radius.

Terminating and fixing

Always terminate conduit with a matching conduit fitting, never with tape or a cable tie. The fitting takes the pull and maintains the enclosure rating. Fix long runs with clips at regular spacing so the conduit does not sag and load the cables at one point. At corners use an elbow instead of forcing the conduit.

Conduit and movement

For continuous, fast travel a cable carrier is the better answer: it guides the cables at a fixed bending radius. Conduit may move, but it must run freely and should not be carried inside a cable chain. Inside a chain it adds friction and fill, shortening the life of both.
