What exactly do you measure on the cables?
Measure the real outer diameter with a caliper, not the value from an old drawing: sheaths vary by up to 1 mm between manufacturers. Note the weight per metre too — you need it for the unsupported length. Measure hoses when filled, because an air hose expands slightly under pressure.
How much clearance should you allow?
At least 10% in height and width. Above 2 m/s, above 60 °C or outdoors in the sun, go to 20%: cables expand and need room to slide. Too much clearance is wrong as well — cables that can swing freely chafe against the crossbars.
How do you divide the width into compartments?
Each cable belongs in its own compartment, or in one with cables of similar diameter and stiffness. Allow 2 to 4 mm of width per separator. Place heavier cables towards the outside, symmetrically left and right, so the chain does not twist.
Should you reserve space for future additions?
Yes: plan 15 to 20% extra width. A wider chain costs a few euros more per metre, but replacing a chain because one cable is added costs a day of downtime. With adjustable crossbars you can simply re-divide compartments later.

Frequently asked questions
- May cables lie on top of each other in a carrier?
- Only with a shelf or height divider. Without one the layers slide over each other and the sheath chafes through within months.
- What if one cable is much thicker than the rest?
- Then that cable sets the inner height. Consider a separate, wider chain if the difference exceeds a factor of two — often cheaper than one tall chain for everything.
- Can I change the inner width later?
- The chain's inner width no, the compartment layout yes. That is why 15 to 20% extra width on the first order is the cheapest insurance.
