How accessible is the chain in the machine?
If the chain sits in an open trough or on a gantry you work from above: outward-opening. If it lies under a table, in a closed duct or between two machine parts, you only reach the inside of the bend — inward-opening is then the only practical option.
How often will cables be swapped?
On machines where cables are added regularly — test rigs, prototypes, machines with options — an openable version pays for itself in a single service call. On a series machine built once, fixed crossbars are fine.
Does openable cost stiffness?
Slightly. Fixed or closed crossbars carry more, which shows on unsupported lengths above four metres or fill weights above 8 kg/m. In those cases we use openable covers with a locking clip, or fit a closed crossbar every second link.
Do you need tools to open it?
Most plastic crossbars open by hand or with a screwdriver as a lever. On steel chains covers are bolted or clipped; expect a socket wrench and the manufacturer's torque. Always work with the machine de-energised.
| Situation | Recommendation | Assembly time | Stiffness |

Frequently asked questions
- Can I convert a non-openable chain later?
- On many series you can order separate openable crossbars and swap them per link. Ask us for the crossbar type matching your series; it often saves a complete new chain.
- Is inward-opening weaker?
- Barely; the difference is accessibility, not load capacity. On long unsupported lengths, the crossbar type (open, closed, cover) matters far more than the opening direction.
- Which version is standard from stock?
- We stock the outward-opening version of the common series; other variants usually ship within two to three weeks.
