Cable carrier makes noise: causes and solutions

A cable carrier that slaps, rattles or ticks is more than annoying: it almost always signals that something is not running cleanly. Noise means play, slapping or friction — and that costs service life. Below are the causes we see most often in the field, in the order you should rule them out.

  • Slapping at the reversal point: usually an unguided axis
  • Rattling at low speed: play from wear or contamination
  • Ticking at high speed: too little fill or loose cables
  • Quiet versions and guide troughs available ex stock

1. Insufficient guidance on long travels

If a carrier runs unsupported for more than roughly one and a half to two metres, the upper run sags and slaps onto the lower run at every reversal. That is the typical thud-thud sound. The fix is a guide trough in which the upper run glides neatly over the lower run; that calms the motion, often halves the noise and considerably extends service life.

2. Play from wear or contamination

In a worn carrier the pin-and-hole joint has worn out and every link ticks at each change of direction. Dust, chips and wood dust accelerate that process. If the carrier rattles audibly when you bend it by hand, replacement is the only real answer — and then pick an enclosed version if the environment is dirty.

3. Too little or uneven fill

An almost empty section sounds louder than a well-filled one: nothing damps the links. Loose cables sliding back and forth in an over-wide chamber do the same. Distribute the fill with dividers across the width, keep equal weight left and right of the neutral line, and switch to a narrower series if needed.

4. Too fast or too hard acceleration

Above roughly 2 m/s and at high accelerations the whipping effects in the carrier become audible. High dynamics require a guided run and even fill. A light plastic carrier is quieter than steel; if steel is unavoidable, guidance and a damped installation become more important.

5. Installation: height offset and driver bracket

If the fixed end sits at the wrong height, the arc does not run round and the carrier ticks against something every stroke. Check that the fixed end and driver bracket are in line, that the trough is not dented and that no cable clamp sits inside the moving zone. This is the cheapest of all causes and at the same time the most common.

Rule out in this order

  • Does the carrier run unsupported over 1.5 m? Add a trough.
  • Bend it by hand: audible play? The carrier is worn.
  • Is the fill evenly distributed and fixed with dividers?
  • Fixed end and driver bracket in line and at the right height?
  • Contamination in the links? Choose an enclosed version.

Frequently asked questions

How much noise is normal for a cable carrier?
A well-guided, well-filled plastic carrier is barely audible above the machine at normal speed. Regular ticking or thudding is always a signal, not something to accept.
Does lubrication help against the noise?
No. Plastic carriers are maintenance free and lubricant attracts dust and chips. Fix the cause: guidance, fill, installation or replacement.
Is steel always louder than plastic?
Yes, steel is louder. Choose steel only when heat, chips, length or weight demand it — and then make sure it is properly guided.
